Whats Up

The Whats Up web part for Sprocket 365 is a powerful tool that allows you to display employee birthdays and work anniversaries on your site. Use it on home pages or team areas to keep colleagues visible and engaged. In this article, we will show you how to create and use the Whats Up web part in Sprocket 365.

Features​

  • Birthdays and anniversaries from Microsoft Graph or SharePoint User Profile (configurable per type).
  • Card layout: days-until badge (themed with site colors), profile photo, display name, occasion (birthday or anniversary with icon), and date.
  • Sample data: mode for editors to preview the web part without live directory data.
  • Optional custom CSS and custom CSS class on the web part container (see Styles in the property pane).

How to configure the Whats Up web part​

  1. If you are not already in edit mode on your page, select Edit on the top right of the page.
  2. Select Edit details Alt text at the top of the web part
  3. Hover over the Alt text icon and type ‘Whats Up Sprocket’
  4. Toggle ‘Show Title’ On/Off
  5. Toggle 'Show in Panel' On/Off
  6. Show sample data — Preview layout with sample birthdays/anniversaries (useful in edit mode).
  7. Maximum number of items — Cap for how many events are loaded and listed (combined ordering by date).

Birthdays​

  • Show birthdays — On or off.
  • Data source — MS Graph or SharePoint User Profile.
  • Custom birthday field name — When using a custom profile property instead of the default.
  • Department filter / Office filter — Limit which users appear (when supported by the data source).
  • Next X days filter — Only upcoming birthdays within this window (slider range as shown in the UI).
  • Empty fields filter — Optionally hide people missing selected profile fields (for example no photo or no department).

Anniversaries​

  • Show anniversaries — On or off.
  • Data source — MS Graph or SharePoint User Profile (hire / anniversary date field).
  • Custom anniversary field name — When using a custom property.
  • Department filter / Office filter — Same idea as for birthdays.
  • Next X days filter — Window for upcoming anniversaries.
  • Empty fields filter — Same pattern as birthdays.

Calendar events (deprecated)​

Earlier versions could show events from SharePoint calendar lists and offered a command bar with links to “More events” / “Add new event.” That functionality is no longer available in the current Whats Up web part.

  • Backward compatibility: Existing pages may still have saved properties such as calendarEnabled or calendars. Those values are ignored at runtime and are not shown in the property pane. The web part will not error; it simply shows birthdays and anniversaries only.
  • If you need calendar events on a page, use the standard SharePoint Events or Calendar web parts, or a list view, alongside Whats Up.
